We spent the first five weeks of the summer sending our projects out to work with the same three Matamoros pastors each week. The project that began on July 12 marked the mid-point at which we switched to two new sites. One of those sites is Templo Peniel, the congregation shepherded by Pastor Hilario. We worked with Pastor Hilario through the first four weeks of the summer of 2007 and have been abundantly blessed by his family, his church, and his ministry each week that we have worked there.

Templo Peniel began as a youth group meeting in local parks. Hilario pursued a call to pastor as the community of believers expanded into and beyond the doors of a local building. Two and a half years later, they are still cramming into the sanctuary to interact with Christ's body and to listen to Pastor Hilario convey to the body of believers the need to love God and love others. The church is also being reminded through some current financial struggles that trials cause spiritual growth within a community.

     The landlord

over Templo Peniel has seen Adventures in Missions constructing a sturdy bathroom on the church property. She informed Hilario that since he has the money to pay for such a construction project, he must have the money to pay almost doubled rent.

Hilario's long term vision to address the facilities issue is for God to provide land on which they can construct a building of their own. The vision of the Church (the body of believers) is that of missions and community. They are blessed to find fellowship with churches from all across America, and are reminded of the labor left to do in their area.

Templo Peniel has come a long way from a few teens in a park to a packed-out building full of families. It appears Templo Peniel still has farther to go. God is not done yet and all involved anticipate His provision.
